2) Competition
A foot race is the oldest physical competition known to man. Second to that, and by a long shot, is wrestling.
There seems to be something instinctive about running faster than the next guy. Maybe it’s the concept that our caveman, or paleolithic ancestors needed to be faster than their opponents (other humans and animals) to the hunt for food. It could have also been the fact that our ancestors needed to run away from becoming food themselves. Whatever the case may have been back in the day, it was literally survival of the fittest AND the fastest.
We have all raced someone at some point in our lives. Think back to your elementary school P.E. class, little league baseball, ultimate frisbee, or a challenge from a friend at the park or on the street. These are only a FEW examples of the times I have raced opponents when I was a kid. By the way, I never lost!
There is nothing more competitive and simplistic in nature than an all-out foot race from a start point to an end point. It’s encrypted inside all our genes whether we use it or not. That is, the ability to use all our mental energy, muscles and bones as fast as possible to accomplish a sprint.
If you’re looking to bring out your competitive nature, as well as vastly improve your fitness levels and have a good ol’ time doing so, then grab your friends, coworkers (and maybe some enemies) and head to the track/park/street and race them! Team relay races are also a great way to compete with other people.
Sprints will make you more competitive within your sport, against others and most importantly, against yourself. You will always crave to be faster than your previous time. Only with practice and proper training, improvements in speed can occur.
Finally, sprinting will bring out your competitive nature and accelerate it to high levels that can change your life. It may have a carry-over effect to other areas in your life that need to catch up with the rat-race society that we live in today.
1) Sprints Are COOL
This says it all!
Sprints are cool to do, period!
Here are some reasons why:
Sprinting is cool because it will test all your limits and show you and your competitors what you’re made of. If you puke, that’s okay! With some time and training you will gain an affinity for sprints and begin to feel great and become extremely fit.
Sprinting is cool because the majority of the sprint duration you are airborne. This means neither foot is in contact with the ground throughout most of the stride.
Sprints are cool because they can be done almost anywhere, indoors or outdoors. Variations of sprints can be performed on treadmills, stairs and bikes. Swimming sprints can be performed in pools, lakes or oceans. (As long as speed and intensity are very high, you can gain the sprinting benefits with these variations.)
Sprinting makes you look fast, tough, mean and cool. They match the intensity of today’s society.
